It is not yet a campaign brief.

Before you choose a channel or write an advertisement, you need to explain who the campaign is for, what action you want them to take, what the business can actually deliver and how you will judge the work. Otherwise, a designer can produce an attractive creative, a writer can produce persuasive copy and an analyst can produce a report—while all three are solving different problems.

A digital marketing campaign brief is a shared description of those decisions. It does not need to be long. It needs to make the important choices, assumptions and unanswered questions visible.

The worked example below uses a fictional bicycle-repair business. Its capacity and schedule are invented for practice. No campaign has run, no customer data has been collected and no commercial result is being reported.

Start with the constraint, not the channel

Imagine that a bicycle-repair shop has unused weekday service appointments. The owner says, “We need more Instagram posts.”

That request names an output. It does not establish whether Instagram is the right route, which customers need the service or why appointments remain empty.

A stronger starting statement is:

The shop wants more suitable requests for its available weekday bicycle-service appointments. The campaign must explain the service and booking process without offering a price or completion time that the shop has not approved.

This still leaves questions. Are customers unaware of the shop? Are the available times inconvenient? Does the booking page fail to explain the service? A brief should record these questions rather than quietly turn guesses into facts.

A filled campaign brief

Brief field

Fictional example

Business problem

Weekday service appointments are underused; the cause has not been established.

Working audience

People who regularly cycle and can visit the shop during its service hours. This is a hypothesis to investigate, not a verified audience profile.

Geographic boundary

Customers within the shop’s confirmed service area. The owner must define it before any local targeting or service-area claim.

Desired action

Submit a bicycle-service appointment request with enough information for the shop to check suitability and availability.

Service promise

Request a service appointment. Staff will confirm the work, availability and applicable price; submission does not guarantee a booking.

Capacity constraint

For this exercise, assume the shop has eight weekday appointment slots available each week. This is capacity, not a forecast of demand or a campaign result.

Duration

A hypothetical two-week pilot, starting only after approval and readiness checks.

Deliverables

One service-message outline, two alternative creative concepts, one enquiry-page outline and one reporting template.

Channel decision

Compare appropriate channels after reviewing the audience, existing assets and service area. Do not assume every campaign needs paid advertising.

Budget

Not authorised. Record any proposed advertising, production or software costs separately for approval.

Reporting

Separate submitted requests, qualified requests, confirmed appointments and completed services.

Approval owner

The business owner approves service facts, offers, budget and launch; the learner prepares the proposed work.

Notice what the brief does not promise: eight new customers, a particular cost per enquiry, guaranteed sales or an immediate repair. Those would require separate evidence or an approved service commitment.

Define the action precisely

A campaign can appear successful if everyone uses a different meaning of “lead”.

For this example, use four separate stages:

Submitted request: an appointment request has been accepted by the enquiry system.

Qualified request: staff confirm that the requested service and location are suitable and that the person can be contacted.

Confirmed appointment: the customer and shop agree on an available appointment.

Completed service: the agreed work is actually completed.

These are proposed definitions for the fictional exercise. Another business may need different stages.

A click on “Book” does not establish that a request was successfully submitted. A request does not establish that an appointment was confirmed. Define the stages before preparing a report so that the numbers answer the business question.

For a classroom simulation, leave the results blank. A blank measurement field is more honest than an invented conversion rate.

Keep facts, hypotheses and unknowns separate

Use a small evidence register alongside the brief:

Statement

Classification

Next step

Eight weekday slots are available each week

Fictional input supplied for this exercise

In a real project, confirm current capacity with the owner.

Regular cyclists will prefer weekday appointments

Audience hypothesis

Investigate rather than presenting it as established customer behaviour.

The shop is the fastest in the city

Unsupported claim

Do not use without appropriate evidence and a clearly defined comparison.

Every repair is finished the same day

Unconfirmed service promise

Ask the owner about service-specific turnaround before writing copy.

Customers can request an appointment

Proposed campaign action

Verify that the booking route actually works before launch.

This register helps explain your reasoning in a portfolio. It shows where you relied on supplied facts, where you made a working assumption and where you stopped to ask a question.

Write deliverables that someone can review

“Create a good campaign” is difficult to assess. A deliverable should say what will be submitted and what the reviewer should examine.

For the fictional shop, the submission could include:

Message outline: the audience problem, the proposed service message, the next action and the facts still awaiting confirmation.

Two creative concepts: different ways to explain the same approved service, with a short rationale for each.

Enquiry-page outline: the information customers need before submitting a request, without inventing prices, opening hours or a turnaround promise.

Reporting template: fields for the four stages above, the reporting period, the data source and known limitations.

Decision note: what you would investigate before selecting a channel or proposing a budget.

Define exclusions too. Preparing a concept is not permission to publish it. Drafting a budget is not permission to spend it. Reviewing an account is not permission to change its settings.

Our live-project checklist explains the questions to ask about responsibilities and access when work involves a real business.

Review the brief before producing the campaign

Try this review question: Could another person use the brief without inventing an important business fact?

If the answer is no, identify the missing decision. For example:

Weak line: “Offer the cheapest service and get eight bookings every week.”

Stronger line: “Prepare copy for a service-appointment request. Price claims require owner approval. The exercise assumes eight available weekly slots; bookings are an outcome to measure, not a promise.”

The stronger line does not make the campaign less ambitious. It makes the proposal testable and prevents a capacity assumption from becoming a sales claim.

Use these five editorial review checks:

Objective: Does the brief identify a specific business problem and action?

Audience: Are audience assumptions labelled, with a way to investigate them?

Offer: Can each important service claim be traced to an approved fact?

Execution: Are deliverables, exclusions and approval responsibilities clear?

Measurement: Are requests, appointments and completed services separated?

These checks are a suggested practice method, not ASDM’s official grading system.

Reusable campaign-brief template

Copy this structure for your next practice task:

Project label: simulation, personal project or approved business work.

Business problem: what needs to change, and what evidence describes it?

Audience: who is the intended customer, and which assumptions remain untested?

Desired action: what should the person do next?

Offer and supporting facts: what may the campaign accurately communicate?

Constraints: service area, capacity, timing, access, resources and exclusions.

Deliverables: what files, drafts or reports will you submit?

Measurement definitions: what counts at each stage, and where will the evidence come from?

Approvals: who signs off facts, publication, spending and account changes?

Open questions: what must be resolved before production or launch?

Revision record: what changed after review, and why?

Do not fill every blank simply to make the document look complete. “Awaiting confirmation” is a useful answer when the information is genuinely missing.

Present the brief as evidence of your own work

Keep the original brief, your draft, any genuine feedback and the revised version. Explain which decisions you made and which information came from someone else.

If no reviewer has assessed the exercise, say it is self-reviewed. Do not write a trainer comment on their behalf. If the campaign has not launched, describe the outcome as a completed practice brief—not a successful customer-acquisition campaign.

Use the portfolio guide to organise the material. The value is in making your contribution and reasoning clear, not in adding an impressive result that the work does not establish.

Your next step

Write the bicycle-shop brief in your own words, then ask someone to identify the three most important unanswered questions. Revise those points before designing the campaign.

To explore the wider learning process, read about practical digital marketing training.
